Artist statement

Until 2006 humans and human figures were very important in my work. My focus then was the visual shape shifting of the mother to be.

Driven by my personal problem of skin pigmentation I added an organic element in my work in 2007. The shape of a helix structure of a molecule with atomic connections was added. This exposes an autobiographic layer in my work which emphasizes layering, safety and protection armors. From there on I started searching for my identity, looking for a starting or ending point, a zero point, no man’s land. Questions arose such as: How big is a dot? A dot keeping it all together. A connection between things, such as the equator connecting North and South. How are my past and present connected?

Points, dots and spots become more and more visable in my work, for example in my soft sculpture performances and my drawings. The human aspects however remain visable. Through my performances interactions take place with people and their environment after which the remaining (soft) sculptures get their own meaning.

My work has a hybrid nature. My native and inherited need of storytelling is being activated by a complex palet of ideas. Realising them makes me reach for installations and performances to visualise my images. I use eclectic methods in art, among other things photography, sewing, drawing, painting, sculpting and performances. In my work you can also see my reaction on the work of Jheronimus Bosch, one of my greatest inspirers.
